One of the key findings of the original research is that revenue was not as strongly correlated to the level of complexity in an organization as the number of employees. For example, a construction company generating $5M in revenue had a different level of complexity than a professional services company generating $5M in revenue, in part because they had a significantly different number of employees. In the end, the data showed that when you group businesses by range of employees, they have more in common than when grouped by range of revenue. The patterns that emerge across businesses with the same employee count were identifiable and consistent.

The original research was performed by James Fischer over several decades as he sought to understand why so many businesses fail while others succeed. He published his discoveries in the book Navigating the Growth Curve (2006). His research continued until 2017, when Matthew Pohl acquired the IP and branded the methodology as Organizational ReWilding®. Pohl has continued the research to this day. No—we think of ourselves as more of the anti-SaaS system. Organizational ReWilding focuses on principles and structures, not software. While we leverage technology where helpful, we find that most owners and leaders of small and midsize businesses need to improve their critical thinking more than their technology. The right principles and structures can propel an organization for decades.
